These flyers were designed for the Kentucky School of Art to advertise some of their upcoming class offerings. I decided to work off the logo by making it the dot of the exclamation point for the “sign up” call to action. I utilized color to differentiate the flyers so the same design could be used over for each class without them being confused with each other. I also brought in some of the textures used in the website design to bring a little more cohesiveness to the two pieces.

This poster was a concept designed for the annual Art Car Weekend in Louisville, KY. The only requirement for the design was that it include some imagery of a winged Volkswagen Beetle that had been used in past promotions. I developed my own version of the flying car and came up the idea to print batches of the poster in the four color sets shown or in others to be chosen by the client. I thought this would give a nice aesthetic variety to the posters hanging around town and bring a bit more attention to them. Unfortunately the design wasn’t picked up by the client although I never found out why. I still felt it turned out nicely so I decided to go on and share it.

A friend asked me to give him some help a couple weeks ago on a poster he was working on for an upcoming biking event in Cincinnati. I decided to take a shot at it and came up with this. I went with some bold colors and type to catch people’s attention and threw in a bit of humor with the variety of bikes shown. I also managed to cram in a map, body copy and and logos to completed the design. If you’re interested you can keep up with the event at http://www.facebook.com/bikethestreetcar.

I created this piece as a way to express the concept of letting go of whatever it is that eats you up, stresses you out, brings you down, or just holds you back. The imagery seen here was not created using any photoshop effects, it is simply made up of a series of layered, long-exposure photographs I took.

This piece came out of an academic assignment that required me to design a cover for a rap album titled Smash It. Since we were given no other information, I decided to actually come up with a concept or theme behind the music on the album. This ended up being about breaking down people’s ingrained perceptions, their preconceived notions, stereotypes, etc. I represented this album concept through the shards of broken glass containing reflections of people’s eyes. I did both the photography and design for this piece and had a heck of a type smashing up the glass for the shot.

I’ve been reading a lot recently about human evolutionary, intellectual, and consciousness development. Without really digging down into it, one of the main ideas that hit me was the realization that until humans gained their sense of self, or ego, they were really nothing more than very intelligent animals. This development that makes us so unique also lies at the root of many of the negative occurrences in world. This is the basic theme behind the design I’ve created here.

The technical aspects of this piece build off the work of an amazing designer named Emmanuel Guillod, who creates complex grids that work as beautiful abstract designs on their own. He then uses these as the structures in his design layouts. I tried to follow this style and below you can see the grid I developed for the basis of the finished design.

This design developed from the fact that just about all of my most creative ideas seem to just appear. I do brainstorm, sketch and constantly think about different design solutions but all of these things seems to simply warm my mind up. It really isn’t until my mind is clear of thought that I truly get quality results.

It reminds me a bit of something I read once, I believe about Benjamin Franklin although I could be wrong. Whoever it was, the story went that in order to come up with new ideas, he would hold a set of keys in his hands as he sat in his chair for a nap. Franklin would also set a metal plate on the ground below his hand so that just as his mind settled and he began to drift into sleep, he would drop the keys and be jolted up when they hit the plate. The hope being that he would awake with something new and creative.

This project was an exploration in stamp design that focused on creating a series based around some of the great American Innovators: Gordon Gould – the Laser, Buckminster Fuller – Geodesic Dome, Ralph Teetor – Cruise Control, and Jonas Salk – Polio Vaccine. I tried to go for a clean retro and slightly avant garde style for the design. Some of the stamps turned out better than others but I believe the overall series was very strong. I chose to take a clean approach because it allows the design to still function well within the size limitations of stamps.

This piece was created in response to a design assignment that challenged me to come up with a metaphor for a book titled “Staying Tuned”. As you can see from the tag line in the poster, it was about keeping an audience in today’s media. I decided to represent this idea through the pixelated portrait because today’s audiences are spread out across the mass amounts of digital content that is available through numerous mediums. It used to be that content was delivered through print, radio and tv. Now, it’s understandable that media companies find it hard to keep the same sized audience when they can view content on devices such as mobile phones, portable media players, laptops, computers, tvs, ebooks, and others that deliver media from places like hulu, podcasts, youtube, torrent sites, rss feeds, netflix, ebooks, and many, many other sources.

I was doing some research on drunk driving and ended up designing this infographic. I guess the fact that 21 to 24 years olds cause the most alcohol related accidents was kind of obvious but I did find it somewhat interesting to see how this information looked on a state by state basis. Also, the headings are a bit tongue-in-cheek and I guess me having to mention that kind of takes the fun out of it but I didn’t want to listen to anyone complain about them. The info used for this graphic came from the 2006 and 2007 data sets found on www.NHTSA.gov.
